BERPC-STL 2016 Club Championship

The 2016 BERPC-STL Club Championship will be held on Saturday, 24 September at the Benchrest Rifle Club in Wright City, MO. The club championship is a "recreational" match, meaning state-of-the-art competition equipment is discouraged. Participants should be able to grab common firearms from their safe and come out to shoot.

The 2016 match will be similar to the 2015, with participants shooting 3 courses of fire (CoF), one each with a rifle, pistol, and shotgun. The CoFs are will be shot with "tactical" type firearms: AR, AK or similar, centerfire, semi-automatic rifles; centerfire, semi-automatic pistols; semi-auto or pump shotguns of 20 ga or larger. Appropriate firearms for each of the categories will be available for anyone who does not have access to one (refer to details below).

NOTE: Advanced registration is required. Please contact Club Championship Match Director Matt Fay by noon on Friday, 23 September to register. The match fee is $15.

Course of Fire

The match consists of three courses of fire, and shooters must complete all three courses to be eligible for awards. Scoring for the courses will be a cumulative time for each course, with time penalties added for misses.

  • Tactical Rifle
    • Any production, AR/AK/other tactical, semi-automatic, centerfire rifle is allowed.
    • Open (iron) sights, scopes and/or red dot sights are allowed.
    • At least 2 magazines holding up to 10 rounds each are required (larger mags are allowed, but they may not be loaded with more than 10 rounds).
    • One string of fire with 10 targets, two shots per target for a minimum of 20 rounds (at least one reload will be required). All shots fired from a stationary position at ranges from 15 to 25 yards.
    • Targets: Reduced-size, IPDA/USPSA style, cardboard
    • Scoring: 2 hits anywhere on the target are required. Score is time plus a 5 second penalty for each miss.
  • Tactical Pistol
    • Any production, semi-automatic, centerfire pistol of caliber 9mm or larger is allowed.
    • Open (iron) sights only; scopes and red dot sights are NOT allowed.
    • At least 2 magazines holding up to 10 rounds each are required (larger mags are allowed, but they may not be loaded with more than 10 rounds).
    • Three strings of fire with a total of 18 targets and a minimum of 20 rounds. All shots fired from a stationary position at ranges from 10 to 25 yards.
    • Targets: Falling steel targets of various sizes; IDPA/USPSA style cardboard
    • Scoring: Steel plates must fall to score a hit; 2 hits anywhere on cardboard targets. Score is cumulative time plus a 5 second penalty for each miss.
  • Tactical Shotgun
    • Any field-grade, production, semi-automatic or pump shotgun of 20 gauge or larger is allowed.
    • Ammo should be bird shot from size 7 to size 9; buck shot will not be allowed.
    • Open (iron) sights only; scopes and red dot sights are NOT allowed.
    • Three strings of fire with 5 targets per string for a minimum of 15 rounds. Each string will start with shotguns loaded to 2+1 (two rounds in the magazine, one in the chamber), so reloading will be required. All shots fired from a stationary position at ranges from 10 to 20 yards.
    • Targets: Falling steel targets of various sizes
    • Scoring: Steel plates must fall to score a hit. Score is cumulative time for each string plus a 5 second penalty for each plate that does not fall.
  • Ground Rules
    • Eye and Ear Protection - As usual, eye and ear protection is a must, for both shooters and spectators. We will be shooting at steel targets, which increases the possibility of ricochets and splatter
    • Pistols will be drawn from a holster, so an appropriate holster is required. All shooting will be from a stationary position and a table, bench or other platform will be available to place magazines on for reloading. Magazine pouches are not required but may be used if desired.
    • Cold Range - No loading or handling of firearms outside of the designated safe zone unless directed by a range safety officer.
    • Lost Brass Match - No policing of brass during the match. Once the match is complete the match director will announce that shooters are free to collect brass. Failure to observe this rule may result in a Failure to Do Right (FTDR) penalty.
    • All shooters other than the current and "on deck" shooter are expected to help reset the stage for the next shooter. Resetting the stage means returning steel targets to their ready position and pasting paper targets after the range safety officer indicates scoring is complete. Failure to observe this rule may result in a Failure to Do Right (FTDR) penalty.
    • Failure to Do Right (FTDR) Penalty: A Failure to Do Right penalty of 20 seconds may be assessed when a shooter attempts to gain a competitive advantage by willfully circumventing the match rules. FTDRs are not intended to be assessed for procedural errors made inadvertently by shooters. A shooter may be disqualified from the match upon assessment of a 2nd FTDR.
  • Intro to Active Shooting
    • Following the match, the range officers will conduct an "Action Pistol Shooting" seminar. The seminar will consist of an overview of the equipment and rules for typical IDPA/USPSA matches, as well as the chance to practice drills aimed at improving speed and accuracy. The seminar is in addition to the match itself, and it is completely voluntary. It will require extra ammunition, so plan accordingly.

Round Counts

The match will consist of 3 stages with the minimum round counts listed below. Bringing at least double the minimum round count is recommended to ensure enough ammo to finish the match.

  • Tactical Rifle: minimum round count of 20
  • Tactical Pistol: minimum round count of 20
  • Tactical Shotgun: minimum round count of 15

The "Action Pistol Shooting" Seminar will require additional rounds. Approximately 50 rounds will be required to shoot all the drills once. Additional runs will require additional ammo.

Provided Equipment (Loaners)

The match director will provide one or more of each type of the following firearms for use by shooters without the required firearm. Shooters must provide their own ammo, which should be quality, commercial ammunition. Please do NOT bring reloads or steel-cased ammo if you intend to borrow a firearm.

  • Tactical Rifle: AR-15 style rifle in 5.56 NATO (shooters may bring .223 Remington or 5.56 NATO ammo)
  • Tactical Pistol: Striker-fired, semi-automatic pistol in 9mm (shooters may bring any standard 9mm Luger/Parabellum ammo). An appropriate holster will be provided.
  • Tactical Shotgun: 3-Gun style, semi-automatic shotgun in 12ga (shooters should bring birdshot from size 7 to 9)
